Contract Description:

This contract augments the WDFW Chum focus project 2008-710-00. All the data collected will be incorporated into the WDFW Project 2008-710-00 contract annual progress report.

PROJECT GOAL:  The continuing purpose of this on-going project is to assess the extent of spawning by ESA-listed Lower Columbia River Chinook salmon in the mainstem Columbia River so that the Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS) can be managed to protect and enhance these important populations.  Our primary focus is to determine what conditions must exist to provide successful spawning and rearing below Bonneville Dam and what measures must be taken to protect those fish.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:  Continued implementation of this project will result in an improved understanding of the relationship between operation of the FCRPS and protection of mainstem spawning salmon populations.  Funding will allow continued in-season ... management of the hydro-system, reducing harm to mainstem spawning and incubation.  We have developed a series of tasks designed to inform regional fish managers regarding status and trends of mainstem spawning populations of Chinook salmon.  These tasks will allow us to collect and report on abundance and productivity metrics and spatial structure that are essential for describing population viability and trends in abundance.  They will further the understanding of the spawning habitat requirements for these fish, especially as they relate to hydro-system operation.

Chinook redds will be identified using the following criteria: adult Chinook presence and size of redd. Location in stream as well as gravel size may also be considered. The study area includes sampling locations from river mile 144.5 (Ives/Pierce Island complex) to river mile 136.0 (near Multnomah Falls area). Data collected include: a) Redd counts, b) live and dead fish counts, and c) GPS locations of spawning areas or redds. Carcasses are examined for presence of tags and marks.
